The Old Guard: A First Look

From Director Gina Prince-Bythewood comes the story about a elite group of mercenary soldiers who are immortal and have been living in secret amongst mankind for centuries, based upon the graphic novel -The Old Guard created by Greg Rucka and co-creator and artist -Leandro Fernandez. Starring Charlize Theron as Andy the leader, strategist and oldest of the soldiers, the group consists of Booker-(Matthias Schoenaerts), Joe-(Marwan Kenzari), Nicky-(Luca Marinelli). Due to their extraordinary abilities they are recruited by a mysterious CIA operative named James Copley-(Chiwetel Ejiofor) to complete a mission which proves to be far more nefarious and difficult then they anticipated, this is also dovetailed by the discovery of a young marine Nile-(Kiki Layne) who discovers her own new abilities of immortality, which cause the team to question how long their secrets can be kept from the world and opens old wounds for Andy-(Charlize Theron) and the group from their own pasts, leading to the question when does immortality stop being a gift and begin being a curse? Living forever doesn’t protect you from heartbreak and the fear of loneliness and comes with a price. Charlize Theron as Andy puts in a commanding but subtle performance of strength in the lead which compliments the youthful curiosity of KiKi Layne’s (Nile) and supported by a talented group of international actors giving it a true worldwide feel as the stakes rise and moral compasses are questioned.

The Old Guard is available to stream on Netflix.
