REVIEWER’S THOUGHTS:
‘Hustlers’ was arguably one of the most surprising success stories of 2019. With an incredible line-up of A-Listers attached to the film, it’s no surprise that the film reached success, but I don’t think we were prepared for just how successful it would become. The film generated the best opening ever for studio STX and the highest grossing live-action of all of Jennifer Lopez’s films. And according to Box Office Mojo, the film has grossed an astounding $150 million worldwide. Numbers aside, the film also generated praise from both critics and audience go-ers alike.
The product overall is an excellent buy. The version I got has a protective sleeve and a very pretty cover. I like that it shows all of the main girls as well as Lizzo and Cardi B, who have much more minor roles. It’s very eye-catching and true to the story. I love that this version gives you all of the goods – Bluray, DVD, and digital code! You get the most bang for your buck when they package releases like this, and it really adds to the value as a customer.
Sadly, there’s not a whole lot of special features on the product. There is only the two trailers and the commentary with writer/ director Lorene Scafaria. But the commentary does not disappoint! It’s always fun to listen to actors commentary on films, but the truly great content with the most information always comes from the filmmakers. I especially love hearing from female directors and filmmakers, and was very happy with Lorene’s commentary here. Read below for some tidbits from the commentary (but there’s soooo much more in the Blu-ray!)
Things We Learned from the Commentary feature:
- A lot of the extras in the strip club scene were real life strippers.
- She really wanted to address the stigma associated with strippers and show them how they are providers.
- Jennifer trained hardcore for the dance sequence. Jennifer would joke that it required muscles you didn’t know you had.
- Constance Wu and Jennifer Lopez had incredible chemistry right away.
- She, Constance and Jennifer all did a lot of research and talked to strippers.
- She had high praise for Lizzo and Cardi B. Lizzo called her “Madame Director” and Cardi B did a lot of improv.
- There are a lot of 2007-2008 references. Including the Keeping Up with the Kardashians clip, Britney Spears “Gimme More” playing in the background, and asking Usher to channel his 2000’s attire for the film.
- The economy crash of the time changed the clientele in strip clubs.
- The love for Keke Palmer is very real. She wants Marvel to give her a franchise.
- She started to cry during the Ramona/ Annabelle scene where Annabelle explains her family doesn’t approve and kicked her out. Lili Reinhart brings this beautiful innocence to the character.
- She was familiar with Lili Reinhart’s work on Riverdale but had also seen her in a few indie films and thinks she’s a truly gifted actress.
- There are a lot of nods to Janet Jackson, with her songs sprinkled throughout.
- Jennifer is very maternal and warm in real life, and she describes her as the Mama Bear.
- The names in Ramona’s phones are nods to some of the big Wall Street businesses.
- Crowds would often form wherever they were filming – people wanting to get glances of Jennifer or the rest of the cast.
- The fake vomit Lili has to have in her mouth all the time for takes is made out of graham crackers and sprite.
- Lots of talk about Destiny’s journey, her searching for understanding and family.
- She has nothing but love for women in this line of work, and wishes strippers/ dancers, and even the men who go to the clubs wouldn’t be judged.
‘Hustlers’ is available now digitally, and available via 4K Ultra HD/Bluray/DVD on December 10th!
