HNS Review: The third outing from the Portokalos family proves to be the weakest. Even so, it’s nice to see the returning characters visit the homeland! There are some new elements introduced that make the family dynamic come full circle. The parent’s absence in the film was noticeable, but there were some nice tributes to them along the way. Fans of the series will have lots to chew on here, but I wish the film were able to accomplish more.

About the Product: This package comes with a disc set and a digital code to download. With this feature, the buyer will have access to the film anywhere. Popping in the disc at home and downloading the digital code are both easy to do. The paper sleeve around the case highlights the special features and personal approach from actor/director Nia Vardalos.

About the Special Features:

Gag Reel – Goofs and missteps are a fun part to see of any production. It’s clear that the cast is having fun with one another being in the Greek family setting again. The section is pretty short but has some fun moments.

Deleted and Extended Scenes – Another short section here. There were three deleted scenes, all of which made sense to cut from the film. But the flight scene where Voula starts teasing the flight attendant about her neck moles made me chuckle. I wouldn’t have minded if they kept that one.

On Set with Nia Vardalos – Seeing Nia Vardalos take over the director duties was my favorite section of the special features. Toula has been a big part of her journey in the film industry, so seeing her heart and soul pour out for this story was nice to experience. The cast was very comfortable with her guidance in the filmmaking process. After all these years, it’s clear these people feel like family to one another. Don’t miss this section!

Opa! The Making of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 – Another good section of bonus features here. Each member of the cast and crew felt like a third installment would be a nice way to cap off the series. Adding an authentic Greek setting helped freshen up the story while adding to the Portokalos legacy. Shooting this film in Greece helped the cast connect to their characters and provided a nice tribute to Michael Constantine’s Gus (who was not in the film). Nia Vardalos explains how she wasn’t ready to direct a film in the series when the studio asked her to do the 2nd, but felt ready with the 3rd

Wedding Drum Song – Extended Take – Very short sequence. The big dance scene at the end of the film is shown from a different angle and plays for a bit longer. I would have enjoyed seeing more of the construction of the sequence and how Vardalos wanted it choreographed rather than just extending it.

Feature Commentary – We see director Nia Vardalos elaborate on her thoughts about making the 3rd film. She explains how personal this project was for her and why it was important to tell another story about this family. Hearing the cast explain why they came back really emphasizes how excited they were to have Nia directing them. Actor John Corbett also explains how his journey has changed throughout each film.
