Heels stars two of Canada’s top talents in Stephen Amell (Arrow) and Alexander Ludwig (Vikings) who play brothers Jack and Ace Spade respectively. The two brothers are professional wrestlers who run their late father’s wrestling promotion in small town Georgia. In this review, we go behind the curtain to find the out and learn the secrets behind the wrestling industry and the men and women behind the showmanship. We also go on a journey to find out what it really means to be a heel (a wrestling villain) or a babyface (a wrestling hero) as they try to take the promotion into national prominence while dealing with their own volatile relationship with each other. Heels also stars Alison Luff, Mary McCormack, Allen Maldonado and Alice Barrett. The creators and showrunners are Michael Waldron and Mike O’ Malley.
Below is a short introduction to some of the main characters:
Jack Spade (Stephen Amell) is the elder of the brothers. He is the head of the DWL promotion, a gifted writer, a ring general, uncompromising, tough, rugged, a husband, a father, and has a great mind for the wrestling business. But he often butts heads with those who don’t see his vision to take the promotion to greater heights.
Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig) is the younger fiery brother of Jack. He possesses raw athleticism and charisma with the potential to get to the top of professional wrestling. But impatience and his volatile nature often causes him to clash with Jack and hinder his potential. He battles this along with the dark past of his family, which will help him to discover the true definition of being a Heel or a Face.
Crystal Tyler (Kelli Berglund) has loved wrestling since she could remember. She knows the business inside and out, and has a great mind for it. She is the Manager/Valet for Ace Spade, but her real desire is to wrestle. She is a super talented wrestler and athlete and may be the most talented of them all, but as a young woman is constantly overlooked and often stereotyped in the business. She is desperately wanting an opportunity to show how great she is and to trailblaze her own path. We get glimpses, but it remains to be seen where her journey will go.
Apocalypse (James Harrison Jr.) is the loyal powerhouse of the DWL-(Duffy Wrestling League) promotion. He can at times be the voice of reason and often tries to bring calm to the more inexperienced wrestlers and those looking for guidance.
