Ace detective Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son, Tim, to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth Detective Pikachu. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to work together, as Tim is the only human who can talk with Pikachu, they join forces to unravel the tangled mystery.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu is a film I wasn’t expecting to love as much as I did. The film picks up right away and there is no lull in the story. It’s action packed, hilarious, and a thriller at times. But the best part of all is of course the Pokemon! These Pokemon are the CUTEST. I grew up with Pokemon, though I was never a big fan or enmeshed in the fandom. My relationship with Pokemon was more the little sister to the big brother who was obsessed with Pokemon. So I knew of some of the more popular characters and was slightly familiar with Pokemon cards and the original Pokemon cartoons. I think what this film does so brilliantly is it creates a story that both adults and children will fall in love with. For the adults, this film is pure nostalgia, with plenty of screen time of the different Pokemon. This, for me, was the highlight. I loved seeing all the different Pokemon characters on the big screen – and I really can’t stress enough how freaking adorable they all are. On the flip side, this is also a film that children who aren’t familiar with Pokemon will easily fall in love with. Being able to capture both of these audiences is a challenging feat and one Pokemon Detective Pikachu does with ease.

Comedically, almost all the comedy fell to Pikachu, which I didn’t mind because Pikachu was so ridiculously adorable and equally hilarious. And I don’t just mean funny, I mean had me bursting out laughing. The comedy was constant and really added to the overall feel of the film. The cinematography was great, and the filmmakers really created a whole world of Pokemon visually that was aesthetically pleasing and emotionally connecting.

Embrace the nostalgia and go see the film!
