Freakier Friday

I would like to preface this review by saying I LOVED “Freaky Friday” growing up. It was and is, one of my favorite movies of all time. This is saying a lot because I am not a movie girl. With sequels or reboots, you go into them with a little bit of hesitance because it could either be a great homage to the original movie or just plain bad. Thankfully, “Freakier Friday” really did the first movie justice. For that, I am relieved!

A seamless plot

In terms of the plot, it was so seamless. It followed the same formula as the original movie with minor adjustments that would align with Anna being an adult. Much like the first movie, we see that Anna’s daughter is struggling with her mom’s upcoming nuptials that would include a new father and a sister. At the bachelorette party, Anna’s daughter, Harper, and soon-to-be step-daughter, Lily, along with Anna and Tess, encounter a sorta psychic. From there, the body swap begins, but this time, there are four people affected by this turn of events.

Harper switches places with her mom and Lily switches places with Tess. These body switches made for some great comedy. As the two young girls plot to break up their parents, they embark on a crazy adventure. At one point, they come across Anna’s former bf, Jake, and it is hilarious. Seriously, Chad Michael Murray played a small part in the movie, but the part in which he did play was perfect. He did not change one bit! We also see Anna and Tess on their journey in the teenager’s bodies, which include eating junk food that their older bodies cannot handle anymore.

The journey the four go on while trying to get back to normal is ridiculous and fun. I expected the movie to be somewhat cheesy, and it was, but it wasn’t the kind that made me cringe. Instead, it gave me so much nostalgia and laughter. And we even got a performance like we did in “Freaky Friday” with Anna’s former bandmates. I loved that this movie had so many call backs from the original movie!

It’s all about the acting

I think Jamie Lee Curtis may be one of the best actresses of our time. Any role she plays, she is giving it her all. It’s like no time had passed for her playing Tess Coleman. She was able to encompass both of the characters in which she played in the movie. It was also great to see Lindsay Lohan acting again — it also seemed like no time had passed for her playing Anna.

Shoutout to Manny Jacinto, who played Anna’s new beau. I was used to him playing the dumb, goofy Jason in “The Good Place,” so it was awesome to see his acting range. The two actresses who played Harper and Lily were also great. They knew who to encompass the roles of themselves and Anna and Tess, respectively, so well.
