5-star books are sometimes hard to come by, but when you read “The Unhoneymooners” by Christina Lauren, you’ll understand why this book deserves the 5-star rating. After all, Christina Lauren are the queens of the romcom genre, I am convinced.
Now, I started reading Christina Lauren about ten years ago before the writing duo blew up on BookTok. I also meet them at a writing conference I was at back in 2015, and they were so cool and so nice. After that, I was a fan. Plus, I am a sucker for a good romcom book.
“The Uhoneymooners” was a fun, quick read that was light on the spice. When there’s so much spice all the time, the story can get lost, and because this was book was light on the spice, you got a whole lot of story and learned more about the characters and why they liked each other. However, there was some spice there that was well worth the wait. If you know, you know!
I LOVED Olive’s character. (Fun fact: my dog’s name is actually Olive.) Olive was one of the most realistic characters I have read in a while. She acted her age, and she wasn’t overly optimistic about everything. Because guess what? Sometimes life doesn’t go as planned, and sometimes it can really suck. But there is also good in life that she acknowledges. I liked that she had a mid-life crisis where she figured out what would make her happy. Also, she was so quirky! She was also a good sister and so dang honest — we need more heroines like her in romance books.
As far as Ethan, he was a decent romantic lead. There was nothing over-the-top with him that makes him top-tier book boyfriend material, but he was a good balance to Olive. He was just what she needed, and he was sweet to her, which is all that matters.
The side characters were also likable, including Olive’s giant family. Christina Lauren really made me hate Dane, which was the point. He was a cheating, garbage human.
Christina Lauren’s writing makes it so easy to devour a book. They write witty characters and fun scenes that you breeze through. I loved how Olive’s character was so sure of herself — girl power, heck yeah!
Overall, this was such a feel-good read and perfect for summertime! It makes me want to go on a trip to Hawaii where I’m stuck in a fake honeymoon situation with some hot guy and the vacation is 100% free. Sign me up!

- The start of the book where everyone gets sick at Olive’s twin, Ami’s, wedding was equal parts disgusting and amusing.
- Ami calling up all Dane’s mistresses to meet at their house was a boss move. Respect, girl.
- Olive’s new boss firing her for pretending to be her sister on her honeymoon was a bit harsh. Like, you didn’t really know the situation, dude.
- The extended family just showing up at her place unannounced all the time was hilarious.
- THE ENDING was so sweet, and the relationship as a whole was not rushed. Like I said, realistic stuff (for the most part) in this book.
- I need to win a free, all inclusive trip to Hawaii stat.
- I totally understand Ethan’s aversions to public buffets. I get it, man.
