I am a romcom girlie through and through. I also am a fan of Kristen Bell, so I was excited to watch “Nobody Wants This” on Netflix.
Just to be transparent: I don’t know any of Adam Brody’s work, but he did walk past me at a red carpet event, so that’s something. To be fair, I am not part of the “OC” generation. Let’s dig into the romcom TV show of the year!
The show centers around a sex/relationship podcaster, Joanne and Rabbi Noah. The two come from two different worlds, but find themselves falling for one another. If you’re a fan of unlikely pairings, then this show is totally for you.
As far as characters go, I have to say, I liked the side characters the best. I still liked Joanne and Noah, and I enjoyed watching their relationship progress, but the side characters were hilarious. Joanne’s sister, Morgan, was edgy and sarcastic while Noah’s brother, Sasha, was quirky and funny. The two of them together produced some of the funniest scenes. Ester, Sasha’s wife, was what we’d refer to as a Queen B, but in a likable sort of way. She was hilarious. Who I really couldn’t stand was Noah’s mom — she didn’t even try to give Joanne a chance. I think she’s the real “mean girl” in this story.
Now, I am a huge fan of the romance genre, so this show was right up my alley. Opposites certainly attract in “Nobody Wants This,” which makes for some difficulties in Joanne and Noah’s relationship. However, they work through their issues together instead of brushing them aside or ignoring them. It felt authentic. Noah was patient and understanding with Joanne, and Joanne really grew as a person while she was with him. And yes, TikTok was raving about their first kiss, and it totally was solid first kiss between characters. SWOON! At the end, both characters are willing to make sacrifices to be with one another. How can you not cheer them both on?
The ending is a cliffhanger, but you know kind of know what’s going to happen between the two lovers.
Other musings about “Nobody Wants This”
- The Hot Rabbi thing was so Hot Priest from “Fleabag” coded, and I love that comparison between the two shows.
- Am I the only one who liked Mariam’s Bat Mitzvah dress?
- The fashion in the show was top tier, especially some of Joanne’s outfits.
- I thought Rebecca was super annoying — she totally wanted Noah to crawl back to her, and she was just pretty petty. Like, sorry girl, but it’s time to move on.
- I need season two, like, now!
- Some of the best scenes definitely came from the season finale episode. So many laughs and feels going on.
Overall, this was a fun, quick watch. It was a solid romcom show. There’s not many romcom TV shows out there, so I think “Nobody Wants This” was great to add to the genre. Apparently, the show is based off of a true story. What did you think of the show? Comment below!
