Who is a must-read author that whenever they release a new book, you have to have it? For me, it’s Lucy Score. So, when “The Story of My Life” dropped, I quickly ordered it — I had to have it asap. (Also, the cover and the book edges are SO CUTE!)
As always with Score, this book did not disappoint. It was a great way to spend my spring break!
The Zany Cast of Characters
I don’t know if I’m growing up, but the grumpy hero, Cam, just wasn’t my thing in this book. However, I did like Hazel and Zoey — both of them quirky and headstrong. As with Score’s other books, Hazel may have been one of my favorite heroines. She wasn’t too immature, and she didn’t let anyone walk all over her. She was tough and sweet and funny.
I really liked the side characters in this book, too. From the teenage mayor to Cam’s siblings, they all added a different element to the story. But let’s get back to the grumpy hero, Cam. I don’t mind grumpy heroes, but Cam was *too* grumpy, and he was also a bit too abrupt and controlling. The way he told the entire town Hazel and him were dating and then him demanding they were getting married wasn’t romantic, it was bossy. Despite Cam, I liked all of the other characters. This book even had some villains (maybe not in the way that you’d expect).
The Fire Romance
The romance was a slow burn but at the same time, it wasn’t because THE TENSION was totally there. The lead up to the first kiss was paced so well, in my opinion. I like insta-love, but I know it’s not realistic, so the pacing of the romance between Hazel and Cam was perfect.
What made the romance even better in this story is that Hazel is a romance writer, and so she was starring in her own love story while simultaneously writing one herself. That was a unique aspect to the romance! For those interested in the spice, I’d give it 2.5 on a scale of 5. It’s easy to skip if that’s not your thing.
“The Story of My Life” is a Modern Day Pawnee vs Eagleton Storyline
Overall, the storyline was a lot of fun! The balance of humor and heart was great and didn’t feel too forced. The antics were zany, but somehow still realistic. Sometimes Score’s books can get a little too zany, but this wasn’t the case with “The Story of My Life.”
I know this was to be compared to “Schitts Creek,” but the rivalry between towns reminded me of “Parks and Recreation,” as did a lot of the characters and antics that went on. It’s maybe why I liked the book so much because “Parks and Rec” was my jam. But I can see why it’s compared to “Schitts Creek.”
I also liked the storyline of Hazel renovating her house and making it her home. It was total girl power that she up and left her old life to start a new one in a small town. She really was making the small town life seem so appealing, but it still gave the vibes of living in a small town, for sure. Town gossip, anyone?! I tend to lean more toward small town romances than big city romances, so this book was right up my alley.
In terms of ratings, I’d give this a 4/5 stars. The only reason I’m not giving it a 5 stars is because it’s not my favorite Lucy Score book, but it was still a sweet, spicey adventure! If you’re looking for that small town, grumpy hero and spicey romance, then pick up a copy of “The Story of My Life.”
