At first, I was not sure of “A Not So Meet Cute.” I’ve only read one Meghan Quinn book before, and it just wasn’t for me. It didn’t pull me in at first, but when it did pull me in, it pulled me all the way in! I devoured this book in a couple hours it was that fun of a read.

“A Not So Meet Cute” by Meghan Quinn is the perfect romcom featuring the Grumpy x Sunshine trope that everyone on BookTok loves (me included). It has equal amounts of hilarity as it does spice, and that’s what sets this book apart than some other books I have read because it’s not that serious. It’s just all plain fun. If you’re into fake dating that eventually becomes a real relationship with some laughs throughout, this is the book for you. Let’s dig in a bit!

After the main character, Lottie, loses her job, she sets out to find herself a rich man. Huxley, a uber rich guy, is also looking for a woman to complete the huge lie he’s found himself in to secure a business deal. Luckily, they find each other and are able to secure their needs in one another. The problem: Huxley needs Lottie to be his fake fiancée and be pregnant with his baby, so he can be more relatable. The problem? Lottie was a complete stranger and was not pregnant. Uh oh…This plot line of course takes readers on quite the adventure as Huxley works on securing his business deal while Lottie adjusts to a whole new lifestyle.

The characters were all likable, especially Lottie. She was quirky and confident, which made her a great female lead. She was also hilarious. With Huxley, I wasn’t really feeling his character at first. However, when Lottie got him to start opening up to her, I started warming up to him. As he opened himself up to her, he was really thoughtful — I mean if a man flew me on a private jet to see my favorite artist in concert, that would be a man worth keeping.

One of my favorite things about Lottie was that even though she was fake dating and then eventually real dating a billionaire, she still wanted to put into the work for Kelsey’s business. #GirlBoss

The side characters were even well-crafted. I liked the relationship between Lottie and her younger sister, Kelsey. They had such a typical sister relationship and really supported each other. Huxley’s brothers were also a good time, and how can I forget Dave and Ellie? They were super odd, but the scenes with them were some of the funniest in the book. But Angela!? Oh, how I hated Angela, Lottie’s former boss and “friend.” She was the epitome of mean girl from high school, and when Lottie eventually told her off, I wanted to start applauding because heck yes was that satisfying to read.

As I said before, this book was hilarious. There were scenes, like the Lamaze class, that made me literally laugh out loud. It was all kinds of uncomfortable and awkward, which made it so comical between Lottie and Huxley. Not to mention when Ellie took Lottie to go shopping for a breast pump. I was literally laughing out loud in secondhand embarrassment. Some of the scenes were so LA coded, that if you know, you know. Sometimes books are just so serious and heavy, but “A Not So Meet Cute” didn’t take itself too seriously and made for a fun, light read. It’s perfect for a day at the beach or a day on the couch.

Also, can I just say Lottie is on to something here — looking for a new job after getting laid off? How about wandering around a rich neighbor hood seeking out a rich bachelor instead? Sounds like a boss career move, if I do say so myself.

Overall, this book earns a 4-star rating. The comic relief was much welcomed and the spice level was just right. Also, if you’re reading the physical copy, it comes illustrated, which I have never seen before in books! It was a cool feature.
