Jake Gyllenhaal is set to star in a revival of the 1987 play “Burn This” leading a production that will re-open midtown’s Hudson Theater as a Broadway venue.
Michael Mayer, the Tony-winning director of “Spring Awakening” and “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” will direct the Lanford Wilson play, which follows the tempestuous relationship between Gyllenhaal’s character, Pale, and Anna, who meet in the aftermath of a personal tragedy in 1980s New York
Gyllenhaal, recently seen on Broadway in 2015’s “Constellations” will also star in concert presentations of “Sunday in the Park with George” this fall. His role in “Burn This” was originated by John Malkovich (opposite Joan Allen) in 1987 and later played by Edward Norton (opposite Catherine Keener) in a 2002 Off Broadway production. No further casting for the new revival has yet been set
“Burn This” will begin previews in February with an opening night set for March 6.
