Designated Survivor and Speechless are two of the most critically acclaimed new shows of the fall season,” said ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey. “We’re very proud of the creative excellence in front of and behind the camera, and are thrilled to be giving our audience more episodes.”

The renewal means the two shows will be back next season for 22 episodes each.

Designated Survivor stars Kiefer Sutherland and Natasha McElhone. Its first episode claimed 15.3 million viewers and a 3.7 rating among adults 18-49 in live-plus-3 returns.

Speechless stars Minnie Driver, Mason Cook and Lukita Maxwell. It earned a 1.9 rating in the key demo and 6.9 million viewers over two episodes.

Perhaps the most surprising thing about these two renewals are that they are not the first to be renewed for the Fall season ABC was beaten to the punch by NBC who have already given the nod to This Is Us perhaps the Fall season’s most buzzworthy drama.
